Will the piece rust on the outside ?
No, all pieces are sent to a powder coating shop where a rust proof finish is applied.
What is powder coating ?
Powder coating means the paint is applied through a baking process. The paint is sprayed on to the
piece and then the piece goes into an oven where the paint is baked on.
What colors do the pieces come in ?
Our standard color for most pieces is flat black. A natural rusted color is the standard color for our western
and our southwestern pieces. Every piece may be ordered in either the rustic color or in flat black.
Is there other colors available ?
No. In order to keep our cost down in powder coating the pieces, we must focus on only two colors.
Is there anyway to change the color ?
The easiest way to change the color is to use standard spray paint. The powder coating will act as a primer
for what ever finish you wish to apply.
What is it made of ?
Cold rolled flat bar steel.
What is the process of making the pieces ?
Each individual design consists of many small segments of steel. Each segment is forged by hand and hammer
and cut with a hand shear. Once all of the segments have been forged and cut they are welded together using a mig
welder, resulting in one solid piece.
The finishing process consists of eliminating the weld marks and rough look of the steel, This is accomplished by
dye grinding the inside of the piece and sanding down the face.
Is there any heating involved ?
No. A traditional blacksmith uses solid rods of steel that is made red hot and then hammered into shape. The
thickest steel we uses is 3/16 thick and can be forged by hand without using heat.
Are there patterns molds or jigs for them ?
Pattern Each image has the original piece first made of that design. The original is kept as the model for all future
productions of that piece. By using the original as the model, a new piece is made by following the exact detail of the original.
Molds Molds are used for cast iron, where the melted iron is poured into a mold and the finished piece can be
replicated endlessly. All of our pieces are hand bent with no heating involved.
Jigs Jigs are patterns created out of steel to assist in the forging of the steel. They allow the steel to be easily
maneuvered by following the pattern of the jig.
Why don't we use jigs ?
Our pieces are too detailed to create a complicated jig for just one piece. By not using jigs we can keep creating
original deigns.
Can standard pieces be made any size ?
Keep in mind every design has its original piece. In order to alter the size of a piece, essentially another original
needs to be made of that specific size. The minimum charge to do this is $25.00 even if the piece is smaller. NOTE:
Making pieces smaller often is harder than making them larger; because the pieces are all hand forged, the smaller the
detail the harder it is to bend the steel into a small design.
How do I hang it ?
Each piece can be hung from 1 or 2 points, we recommend hanging them from the corners or small crevices where a
screw will not be noticeable (adding a hook or hanger to the piece would take away from the look). If screwing directly
into a stud, a standard wood screw is sufficient, if mounting on drywall a light weight drywall anchor is sufficient.
The piece rests on the shank of the screw with the head of the screw being flush with the surface of the piece. We
recommend using paint or permanent marker to color the head of the screw so that it will blend into the piece.
How much do they weigh ?
Most pieces are very light. They are actually lighter than a framed picture of comparable size. Small pieces weigh
3-5 lbs., larger pieces 7-12 lbs. Our heaviest pieces are only 15-20 lbs. When shipping the larger pieces through UPS
shipping rates are based on size more than weight.
